Mistral Large 4 (“le Chonk”) public preview Mistral’s new flagship is a 1T-parameter natively multimodal model with 49B active parameters, trained from scratch on 3,800 Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral’s own European datacenters. Mistral claims it beats every open-weight model from the US or Europe and is state-of-the-art among open models on enterprise workloads in cybersecurity, finance, and law — with visual grounding that surpasses some frontier closed models. The preview API is live on Mistral Studio today; weights drop end of month after red-teaming with cybersecurity partners and state authorities. HN reaction: genuine respect for the vision and cyber benchmarks, plus interest in EU-sovereignty angle — trained and served in Europe. Skeptics note it trails GLM-5.3 on the broader price-performance frontier and that the “high” reasoning setting barely changes behavior. 1,837 points on HN. OpenAI shares frontier-model math results, including a Unique Games Theorem proof OpenAI published a GitHub repository of 722 preprints produced by an internal frontier model, developed with guidance from the Institute for Advanced Study’s Advisory Group on Mathematics and AI. The repo includes Lean formalizations of many proofs, 10 summaries of the model’s reasoning, and compute accounting — the average result used roughly three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking. The headline result is a claimed proof of the Unique Games Conjecture (now “Theorem”), a central pillar of approximation-algorithm hardness; there are also counterexamples to long-standing conjectures (Kaplansky’s direct-finiteness, Ryser’s covering, Cannon’s conjecture) and progress related to Hodge and Birch–Swinnerton-Dyer. HN’s mathematicians are taking it seriously — one commenter spent 24 years on Barnette’s Conjecture, which appears proven here. Caveat: claims of “resolving Navier-Stokes” circulating in the thread are overstated — the Navier-Stokes preprints concern computation in forced flows, not the Millennium problem. Verification of the proofs is now the community’s job. 951 points on HN. Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026: Kagan and Soai Announced this morning: Henri B. Kagan (Université Paris-Sud) and Kenso Soai (Tokyo University of Science) win “for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.” Kagan’s 1986 discovery and Soai’s 2003 reaction — the first abiotic reaction to produce only one mirror-image molecule — explain how life’s homochirality could have emerged spontaneously, and underpin how chemists manufacture single-enantiomer pharmaceuticals today. 38 points on HN (fresh). OpenAI Decisions API in public beta
A new POST /v1/decisions endpoint, served by gpt-6-luna, that turns text and images into typed answers — predicate probabilities, fixed-set choices, rubric scores — about 10x faster than the Responses API. You pay only for input tokens ($0.10/1M); there are no output-token charges. It’s aimed squarely at classification, routing, and guardrail workloads, and supports ZDR and HIPAA for eligible customers. Notable timing: it landed the same day as Strands Decider 2B (below), an open-source take on the same “decision model” idea — the pattern of small models that answer questions instead of generating text is having a moment. 311 points on HN.

EmbeddingGemma 2: Google’s open multimodal embedding model for on-device Google DeepMind’s follow-up to EmbeddingGemma (20M+ downloads) unifies text, code, images, video, and audio in one 740M-parameter embedding space, Apache 2.0 licensed, built on the Gemma 4 architecture. Modular encoders let you run text-only in ~191MB RAM on a Pixel 11 Pro; Matryoshka truncation cuts vector storage up to 6x; 8K context handles 5.5 minutes of audio or 58 video frames. It claims best-in-class among sub-1B multimodal embedders on MTEB Code and MAEB. Works today with llama.cpp, Ollama, vLLM, MLX, sentence-transformers, and transformers.js. 339 points on HN. Strands Decider 2B: an open-source “decision model” The Strands team (AWS’s agent SDK) released a 2B-parameter model that can’t generate text at all — it only picks between options and returns calibrated confidence scores, in ~115ms on a local RTX 3090. Built by lopping the LM head off Qwen3.5-2B and adding a tiny pointer head with a LoRA adapter. Fully open: weights, training data, and scripts. The pitch is hybrid agents — let an LLM make the hard calls and a decider handle rote routing, guardrails, and tool-vetting cheaply. Third of 33 in its class on JevBench accuracy, first excluding just-over-2B models. 187 points on HN. Attackers mint counterfeit TLS certificates for Google after hijacking three ccTLDs Google disclosed Tuesday that attackers compromised the .gh, .sl, and .as country-code registries, modified authoritative DNS for selected domains, passed automated domain-control validation, and obtained unauthorized certificates for several Google domains and other major brands. Chrome has been updated to block the identified certs and the issuing CAs revoked them. Google’s advice to domain owners: monitor Certificate Transparency logs and publish restrictive CAA records — don’t rely on browser-side fixes. A reminder that domain validation remains the weak link in the Web PKI. 85 points on HN. OpenTPU: an open-source AI accelerator designed by AI agents — RTL, ISA, simulator, compiler, and profiler in one readable monorepo, running real Qwen3, LFM2.5, and Gemma 4 weights on a Xilinx Kintex-7 PCIe card at 82–94% of DDR3 peak. It even streams MoE experts from host storage to run 35B-parameter models. As much a learning project as a chip: the point is you can read the whole stack, from matmul to wires. 292 points on HN. State of Devs 2026 survey results — 5,463 respondents, and the mood is grim: nearly half report job insecurity, ~1 in 10 were laid off in the last 9 months, two-thirds feel less motivated and more cynical, and AI sentiment is split almost exactly down the middle (49% positive, 42% negative). The first Devographics survey to ask about developers’ mental state. 180 points on HN. Sources: https://2026.stateofdevs.com/en-US/, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49985643
Penguin Mail 1.0 — a GPL-3 Rust email and calendar client for Linux with an optional local-LLM assistant (LM Studio/Ollama) that can answer questions about your mail and asks before sending anything. Gmail, Microsoft 365, and generic IMAP in one unified inbox, with no server of its own. 192 points on HN. Sources: https://penguin-mail.com/, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49984716
